Protection of the natural environment at SALEM-Togo
Since November 2000 SALEM has been planting fruit trees, trees for timber and trees for soil improvement in Northern Togo.
Among other things, this programme achieves:
- The improvement of the population’s living conditons through planting trees, which are a gift from GOD. For where there are no trees, poverty reigns in every way and where there are trees there is also life, manifold and peaceful.
- Currently, the Sahara grows by 1 km southward every year. Through a thorough reforestation plan, a certain equilibrium is brought back to the land and we can begin to reverse the desertification of Africa.
- The children grow up with love and respect for nature, resulting in a positive influence on the environment and consequently on every human being.
- A solution to the urgent problem of water shortage which leads to wars and mass migration. Planting trees can only be advantageous:
- Trees stabilise the climate by causing regular rainfall
- Trees restore a high groundwater level
- Trees are the lungs of the earth, converting carbon dioxide into oxygen
- Trees give us fruits, food and building materials
In the SALEM treeplanting campaign in Northern Togo we work together with children and their families and schools so that there may be hope for tomorrow. If we all hold nature in our hearts, there may be PEACE.
