The first help for SALEM-Uganda has arrived: Thank you very much!
19.09.2011We are very thankful that we were able to help in the severe famine in Uganda with the first donations which arrived very quickly. Recently we transferred a sum of 5,000 Euros to Uganda. Further urgent measures will have to be taken in the next weeks and months.
Our article about famine in Eastern Africa has touched many people’s hearts.
We already received the first details by our project manager Denis Medeyi about how the help will be put into effect there. In order to give you a survey you will find a nutrition plan below. The help will now be put into effect very quickly!
Further steps: We think that the most important things to do are reforestation, accompanied by the education and training of young people.
Even on behalf of everybody in SALEM-Uganda: We would like to express our sincerest thanks that we have been able to help so quickly due to your support. We will continue!
SALEM-Uganda’s food programme
We are very grateful for all the kind donations given to us by our friends and supporters. Here’s what we plan to do to tackle the malnutrition in SALEM Uganda and the country.
Short-term aim:
Build more facilities in the health centre i.e. a food and dietary clinic. We are planning to increase food stock in this station, in particular soy beans, millet flour and eggs. Cost: approximately €446
Medium-term plan:
SALEM Uganda is planning to create demonstration gardens and fields as teaching aids for mothers. The land will be provided for and supported by the local community. SALEM plans to start off the project with the purchase of the following items:
- 3 baby scales
- 2 wheelbarrows
- 10 pangas (machetes)
- 20 hoes
- four watering cans
- vegetable seeds. Cost: approximately €385
Long-term programme:
SALEM Uganda plans to concentrate more on work in the community through an integrated programme. For this purpose, the Nakaloke region has made available two housing units based in Kasanja and Namabase. They will be used for:
Diagnostic services:
- HIV/AIDS testing
- growth charts for children
- early signs of malnutrition
- malaria testing
- pregnancy screening.
Preventative services:
- vaccination programmes
- family planning
- post pregnancy care and
- health education.
Both external health centres in Kasanja and Doko need 4 tables, and 12 chairs. Cost: €154
Miscellaneous
- To enable better co-ordination between services and regular follow-up programmes the health centre would like to purchase a motor bike. This will allow staff to reach more remote communities and transport teaching and demonstration material.
Purchase of a motor bike, petrol costs and paperwork: Cost: approximately €877
- Repair of the clinic’s floor and walls, equipping the station with 12 hospital mattresses, duvet covers and blankets. Cost: approximately €1,927
- The food and dietary clinic is one of the few areas in the health centre which hasn’t been equipped with solar panels yet. We have a lot of power cuts and our own generator is switched off at 22.00 hours to save money. We would therefore like to install solar panels in this area. Cost: approximately €646
More updates soon.
We would like to say thanks for all the support and promise to use any donations towards the projects outlined above.
