Education
We believe that education is a vital ingredient in the development and growth of each of us as individuals, and thus in the development and growth of our communities.
Education is a vital element of the children’s and youth villages.
The SALEM School in Maryland offers instruction for students with general learning difficulties or who need extra support at school. It also provides special education for students who are seriously emotionally disturbed, have learning disabilities or complex needs.
The Hunter School at SALEM New England is a private school for children with attention deficit disorders (ADHD/ADD).
SALEM-Uganda offers a variety of education and educational support. The organisation provides:
- A nursery school for up to 75 children
- Training in tailoring for disadvantaged young people
- Work placements for students on vocational training programmes. These include catering, plumbing, electrical and secretarial or business studies.
- A school of nursing (due to open in May 2010)
In addition, to help alleviate poverty, educational and vocational training support is given to children and young people in our community who need assistance to gain the skills and equipment needed to support themselves and their families.
In Bassar, in the North of Togo, local SALEM co-worker, Gbati Nikabou, helps the people to preserve their basic living conditions by delivering environmental educational work at schools and in village communities.
